Statement:
n her work Eva is interested in researching the relationship between photography, history and personal and collective memory. She works with time on different levels, using her own memories and interpretations of the visible world and combines them with the general history. She examines what the past means for our present and what the present can reveal about our past.Besides researching the relationship between photography, history and personal and collective memory Eva is interested in hidden power structures that exist within families, relationships and society.Within her projects she is researching ways of representing the inner personal process within the general subject and giving it a universal character that resonates in the viewer.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Eva Gjaltema (Netherlands, 1979) sees photography primarily as a medium for recording time, memories and transience. She majored in Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam and Photographic Design at the Royal Academy for the Visual Arts in The Hague. By also employing found images and materials, she combines the role of photographer with that of a collector, researcher, editor and curator.
Last october Eva had her first solo exhibition at the Noorderlicht photogallery after having several group shows at de Kunsthal Rotterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Seelevel photogallery, Noorderlicht photofestival Leeuwarden, le Garage in Arles. She was nominated for the longlist of the Dutch Doc Award 2011 for her project 'Famylje' and her work is found in private collections and the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands
